Lydia Ko Explores the Central Florida Swamps with VICE Sports in a New Episode of 'Off Day'

In the latest episode of Off Day presented by Callaway, VICE Sports goes alligator spotting in the Central Florida swamps with the world's #1 ranked female golfer

(BROOKLYN, NY) - VICE Sports today premieres the latest episode of Off Day featuring golf sensation Lydia Ko. At 18 years old, Lydia is the youngest golfer of either sex to ever be ranked #1 in the world. Between practice, school, and more practice Ko doesn't get much time off, so VICE Sports jumped at the chance to explore Florida with Lydia during one of her rare moments of downtime.

Presented by Callaway, this episode of Off Day finds Lydia heading out into the swamps of Central Florida with VICE Sports after hitting a few balls on the range. Joined by her friends on an airboat, Lydia spends the day spotting alligators and facing her fear of reptiles. Along the way, she opens up about the challenges of keeping up the active social life of a teenager while also maintaining the rigorous practice schedule of a top-ranked golfer.

VICE Sports' long-running Off Day series follows athletes off the field and explores the entertaining and bizarre ways our favorite athletes use their limited free time. The series gets a unique look at who our favorite athletes really are when they’re not under the glare of the stadium's lights. Earlier this month, VICE Sports caught up with golfer Andres Gonzales, sharing a few pitchers of beer at his favorite local haunt and finding out what it's like to be one of the most outlandish golfers on the PGA Tour.

Antigua Announces 2016 Windshirts

(PEORIA, AZ) - The Antigua Group, Inc. announces its Antigua Windshirts for 2016. The Spring '16 direction for Antigua's men's fashion golfwear directly reflects current trends taking shape in fashion, from couture to ready-to-wear.

"Antigua's expanded its windshirt category for the Spring '16 collection," says Sean Gregg, Vice President of Product Development and Marketing Support. "We've developed styles that appeal to various needs and demographics, alike. Interlock knits lined with a brushed tricot mesh knit are bonded together with a water-resistant membrane, for comfort and wind protection."

Styles
- Element Vest (right) takes the irregular heather knit pattern from self-collar polo style Element, and is the surface fabric making up the three-layer bonded vest. Contrasted simply by a solid inset at the top shoulder, this is a stylish and functional added layer of warmth.

- Coup (left) is a refreshing update to the short-sleeve windshirt. Using multiple colors of fabric, zipper pocket and placket trim, the quarter-zip, short-sleeve pullover windshirt has been established as an every season wind wear staple. As the trend dictates that short sleeves no longer encroach on the wearer's elbow, Coup accommodates the trend by allowing freer mobility.

- Paragon (center) is a fresh addition to previous successes in Antigua's windwear lineup. This virtual shell styling utilizes the multi-layer fabric developed for Element Vest and Coup, and is interpreted as a raglan sleeved quarter-zip, color-blocked windshirt. Updated detailing comes in the form of color blocking, as the sleeves share the twisted neutral heathers seen throughout the collection and is offset by the primary colors that represent the garment's body. The fabric's stretch allows for comfortable movement while simultaneously insulating the golfer.

Introducing L2 Putters

Just stumbled upon L2 Putters. If you're not familiar, The Gulf States PGA named them one of the Best Putters for 2016. Check out the video HERE.

Here's a little about the company:
OUR VISION
Breaking into the golf market is a difficult task for the small business. We have always believed that a great idea, followed by a quality product, at a reasonable price, can accomplish this. We have also understood that a passion for our goals that is founded in patient enthusiasm, will not be denied. It is because of  these beliefs that LATERAL LINE LLC. is reaching a level of technology and popularity, in the field of golf and specifically on the putting green, that is causing golfers to "try something different."

OUR BUSINESS
We combine emerging technology with high quality standards to bring the best possible product to our customers. Our business is built on a foundation of strength through satisfied customers. We are honored that more than half of our business is through referrals. We commit to bring to our  L2 Lateral Line patrons, a personal level of service and commitment that can only be found in a company based on a vision for a revolutionary product, and an enjoyment in its presentation.

WHO WE ARE
Our company was founded in 2007 and has been growing ever since. It began with the notion that facing the hole to putt a ball made the most sense, but in order to be successful with this idea would require a putter designed to do more of the work than previous putters have been able to do. With the help of skilled computer graphics designers headed by Don Lee, a Pittsburg native and well known Graphics designer, we were able to create the L2 head design that maximizes what would be viewed as an abnormal head weight. Upon completion of the L2 head, the L2 pendulum machine was assembled to demonstrate the pure motion of a pendulum as it stroked the perfect putter.

Golf Course Superintendents vs. Weeds

Take a little look at what superintendents battle to provide beautiful playing conditions. This article appeared in the February issue of Golf Course Industry magazine.

Constant Pressure

Weeds seem to endure your best efforts to suppress them. Experts advise what to look for this year and offer the best weed control and resistance management strategies.

Goosegrass
British author A.A. Milne once says, “Weeds are flowers, too, once you get to know them.” But who wants to get to know them? Certainly not golf course superintendents.

Fortunately for those charged with maintaining impeccable playing surfaces, labs and research facilities are filled with people learning everything there is to know about these wild, unwanted plants.

Zac Reicher, a green solutions specialist at Bayer Environmental Science, for instance, has been studying turfgrass and weeds for more than 34 years. Taking a look at cool-season golf course grasses, specifically, he says annual bluegrass always ranks at the top of the list for weeds, but has plenty of company. Goosegrass is “problematic” in the Transition Zone, but seems to be spreading more into the North and white clover is common in cool-season fairways and roughs.

“Weed control in no-mow roughs or natural areas is becoming problematic,” Reicher says. “Canada thistle, milkweed, and other agricultural weeds are common since mowing is not used as a primary control method.

Canal Shores Embarks on Ambitious Renovation Project

(EVANSTON, Ill.) – The Evanston Wilmette Golf Course Association announced an ambitious capital campaign to fund a multi-year transformation project at Canal Shores, an 18-hole short course that straddles the communities of Evanston and Wilmette near Chicago, Ill. The capital campaign, termed Canal Shores 100 to honor the course’s 100th Anniversary in 2019, will raise funds to give the historic course significant upgrades that will lead the property on a successful path for the future.

Opened in 1919 as Evanston Community Golf Club, Canal Shores has a storied history as an important and much-utilized community amenity for golfers and non-golfers alike. The course, which routes on both sides of the North Shore Channel Canal and winds its way through residential communities and the famous Chicago “L” train tracks, remains a recreational hub for the community with walking paths throughout the urban layout. The Canal Shores 100 project aims to capitalize on the unique nature of the property while enhancing its presence as a great place to learn the game of golf.

The Master Plan for Canal Shores, will give the course four distinct areas of focus and 41 total holes, including:
· The Kids Links 5-hole short course and youth practice facility;
· The Rolling Green 18-hole putting course;
· The Back Lot 6-hole par 3 course that doubles as multi-directional practice facility;
· The Jans Course 12-hole golf course which will pay homage to Chicago’s Golden Age of Golf Architecture.

The versatile and innovative layout will give Canal Shores the ability to attract new segments of golfers at all levels of experience.

“We believe the renovation of Canal Shores will lead to environmental and economic sustainability,” said project visionary Jason Way. “The multi-use facility will encourage golfers of all levels to experience this hub in the community in their own way.”

In addition to serving the community with a multi-use recreational facility, the renovation of Canal Shores will serve to demonstrate best practices in environmental sustainability by maintaining, nurturing and enhancing ecological health and natural habitat of land along the waterway of the North Shore Channel.

Fundraising efforts got off to a strong start as Canal Shores was the first recipient of a partnership grant from the United States Golf Association (USGA) and the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) that gives public golf courses the opportunity to improve the design and maintenance of their facilities.  The project has drawn the attention of others in the local and national golf industry, including:
· Northwestern University Director of Golf Pat Goss, who hopes to use the facility for the Northwestern Men’s and Women’s Golf Teams;
· PGA TOUR Pro Luke Donald, a Northwestern Alum and long-time Goss student, who practiced at Canal Shores in his college days and who will be a design consultant;
· Renowned golf course architect Dave Zinkand, who will be the project lead, as well as architects Drew Rogers (Consultant) and Todd Quitno (Project Manager);
· The First Tee of Greater Chicago, which may use the facility as a home site for youth programming;
· Wadsworth Construction, which has committed $200,000 from its foundation to support the renovation;
· KemperSports, Chicago-based golf course management firm that is consulting on the project.

Highlighted by a final-round 65 and a 6-under-par 30 on the final nine holes, Nicklaus became the oldest winner of the Masters at age 46 and the second oldest winner of any major championship in history.

Golf Channel continues to ask fans to share their own personal stories about the 1986 Masters at GolfChannel.com/Jack, including answering the question: “Where was I” on that historic Sunday three decades ago. Story submissions have come not only from throughout North America, but also Europe, Asia and Australia.

The special will feature interviews with Nicklaus, his wife Barbara, their son Steve, daughter Nan, and oldest son, Jack II – who caddied for his father at the ’86 Masters – members of the broadcast team, fellow professionals, caddies, media members, volunteers and patrons who were on hand. In addition, this Golf Channel Films project will paint a picture of the world’s cultural climate at the time, giving viewers insight into the significance of the victory.

“Playing in front of Jack on that Sunday was truly incredible. Bob Tway was my playing competitor and on the second nine, we spent more time looking back to watch Jack play than we did on our own games. The roars were so loud the hair on the back of my neck was standing up. The energy and electricity in the air were amazing. It was a truly unique experience.” – NBC golf analyst Gary Koch, who played in the group in front of Nicklaus during the 1986 Masters final round.

’86 is being produced by Golf Channel Films, which has developed award-winning, critically acclaimed long-form documentaries and specials including the Emmy-nominated Payne; the three-part documentary Arnie and a follow-up fourth installment, Arnie & Me; and Ben Crenshaw: A Walk Through Augusta.

Nicklaus’ memorable victory came 23 years after he donned his first green jacket, and put an exclamation point on a 25-year period in which he won his record 18 majors. The Golden Bear’s final round in ’86 was highlighted by an eagle-birdie-birdie streak at Nos. 15, 16 and 17 for a second-nine 30. GOLF Magazine called the Nicklaus’ win the “Best Tournament of the 20th Century.” GolfWorld called it the “Greatest Masters Tournament” in history, and the final-round 65 the “Greatest Final Round in Major Championship” history. Golf Digest ranked the ’86 Masters as one of the “10 Defining Moments in Golf History.”

From 1959-2005, Nicklaus made 45 starts at the Masters, winning in 1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975, and ’86. He also holds records for the most top-5, top-10, and top-25 finishes at Augusta National. Even 30 years removed from his final Masters’ victory, and more than 10 years after his final round at Augusta National, Nicklaus owns or is tied for no fewer than 35 Masters’ records.

Kerr Wins GWAA's Bartlett Award

(HOUSTON) — Cristie Kerr’s 20th year of professional golf remains a passionate pursuit – from this week’s Honda LPGA Thailand event to a possible summer berth in the Rio Olympics.

Yet it’s another passion - her commitment to the fight against breast cancer - that earned Kerr praise from the Golf Writers Association of America. The two-time major winner has been named winner of the 2016 Charles Bartlett Award, given to a golfer for unselfish contributions to the betterment of society.

Kerr, 38, founded Birdies for Breast Cancer in 2003, inspired to do something proactive in the aftermath of her mother’s battle with the disease. From such humble beginnings, the foundation in seven years became so successful it partnered with the Jersey City (N.J.) Medical Center to create the Cristie Kerr Women’s Health Center. Breast cancer screening, diagnostic testing, and treatment programs are made available to all women, regardless of their financial abilities, and since it opened in 2010, more than 10,000 procedures have been performed.

“I am both honored and humbled to recognized by the GWAA with the 2016 Bartlett Award and so grateful to the many media members who have helped call attention to our efforts to help fight breast cancer,” Kerr said.

“There is still so much work to be done in breast cancer research and prevention, and I will continue to use my platform as a golfer and wine-maker to raise money and awareness for women battling the disease.”

One of the biggest fund-raisers is a celebrity golf tournament that Kerr hosts at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, an area that has become close to her.

“I want to recognize the staff at the Cristie Kerr Women’s Health Center for their tireless and exceptional work,” Kerr said, “and my partner in Curvature Wines, Suzanne Pride Bryan for her support.”

The award will be presented to Kerr at the 44th  ISPS HANDA GWAA Annual Awards Dinner presented by the PGA of America, PGA TOUR and USGA April 6 in Augusta, Ga. The GWAA will also honor 2015 Players of the Year Jordan Spieth, Lydia Ko and Jeff Maggert  as well as William D. Richardson Award winner Dottie Pepper, ASAP Sports/Jim Murray Award winner Davis Love III and Ben Hogan Award winner J.B. Holmes at the dinner.

Former winners of the Bartlett, named for the former Chicago Tribune writer who served as the first secretary of the GWAA,  include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Tom Watson, Greg Norman, Val Skinner, Betsy King, Lorena Ochoa, and last year’s winner, Morgan Pressel.

Golf Life Navigators’ Growth Substantiates Florida Relocation Trend

(NAPLES, FLORIDA) – Golf Life Navigators – the lifestyle-relocation experts who help people considering a move to Florida find ideally suited places at no charge – reports that the number of clients who purchased golf club memberships and real estate properties during the past 90 days exceeded company sales projections.

“Because 300,000 people a year are moving to Florida, many of whom seek the best possible golf, country club and real estate option for them, we believed our services would be beneficial given our expertise and deep market knowledge,” says GLN President Jason H. Becker, PGA. “But you never truly know if a business’ service will fly until people actually use it, so these successful client placements reinforce that we’re enhancing peoples’ lives.”

GNL’s executive team are veteran PGA of America professionals and Florida real-estate experts who identify places that supremely match their client’s specific needs and desires. The team of trusted advisors are intimately familiar with every aspect of Florida golf clubs and living – from the fine print on membership agreements and the clubs with the most social programs to the most walkable courses and the differences between bundled and non-bundled communities.

This distinct knowledge of clubs, properties and their nuances enables GLN to match appropriate “fits” for their clients’ consideration – no strings attached.

“If they don’t like the clubs, living spaces or communities we suggest, they have no obligation to do anything,” says Becker. “We’re finding that people are thrilled to have their stress and uncertainty largely eliminated from the decision-making experience.  This should be a joyous time for people seeking their dream place but too often isn’t due to the vast number of details to consider and limited time to do so.”

GLN includes two real estate divisions – Golf Life Properties and Aberdeen & Crail – specializing in golf and non-golf properties and communities, respectively.

“We’ve been surprised by the misconceptions people have about certain areas in the state, so providing clarity for them has been crucial,” says Becker.  “For instance, many folks believe that properties and clubs in Naples or Palm Beach County are too expensive for them. They think all homes are $1 million or more and that all golf club memberships start at $100,000. Neither is true, and we need to continue educating everyone.”

Native Eyewear’s 2016 Sunglass Line Now Available

Providing Seven New Styles for Spring and Summer Adventures

(Denver, Colo.) — Now available for purchase, Native Eyewear’s 2016 collection of sunglasses is an eyewear solution that fuses function and style with the latest in lens and frame technology. Adventurous lifestyles call for specialized equipment, and that’s why Native developed a line of sunglasses for men and women that does it all, from competitive sports such as running, fishing, golf, hunting and surfing to outdoor adventures and après leisure wear.

“The 2016 collection consists of six new styles, all inspired by sustainability, enabling adventure, and enhancing outdoor experiences,” said John Sanchez, General Manager at Native Eyewear. “Each model features the use of a bio-based castor  seed resin and high polarization efficiency film that reduces eye fatigue, allowing us to bring color, lightweight touch and feel as well as comfort to the premium polarized sunglass line.”

See the World Clearer
Providing an optimum amount of clarity and versatility, Native sunglasses were designed for performance in every element. The advanced N3 polarized lens protects against the sun’s harmful effects and blocks up to 4X more infrared light than regular polarized lenses on the market. By blocking damaging rays, filtering blue light and reducing glare, the N3 lens delivers high contrast, crisp definition and peak visual acuity while protecting eyes.

Born to Play
The advanced frame technology provides a lightweight, durable and comfortable solution that can withstand harsh conditions, including high-impact collisions and temperature extremes. Native frames are constructed from a castor-based resin making them more earth friendly and stronger than petroleum based alternatives. Additionally, the patented grip material, Cushinol, keeps sunglasses in place during athletic activity. Other features include:
• Revolutionary anti-ocular intrusion system that prevents lenses from dangerously shooting toward your eyes in the event of an impact.
• Exhaust vents that enhance airflow and significantly reduce fog.
• Cushioned and adjustable nose pads that ensure a soft feel and custom fit.
• Flexible hinges that allow the frames to quickly and securely lock into position at the temple.

Hardtop Ultra XP
Models for Every Adventure
With different size, frame and lens options available, seven new styles have been introduced with MSRP ranging from $109 to $149 depending on the lens option.
• Sanitas: A trend-right model that evolved from the Flatirons and the Highline, the Sanitas features edgy colors and a stylish look with an active lifestyle in mind.
• Eldo: Upon popular demand, the Eldo features a larger frame and wider set temple for men.
• Hardtop Ultra XP: Offering extra protection, this model builds on the Hardtop DNA and has an extended lens for additional eye coverage.

b4checkin and Clubessential/Cenetic Announce Strategic Partnership

Collaboration between these leaders in hospitality technology results in operational efficiencies and increased revenue for Pinehurst Resort

(Las Vegas, NV) — The developer of cloud-based, hospitality software solutions b4checkin, and Clubessential/Cenetic, a SaaS technology leader in resorts and clubs, has announced a strategic partnership to create an interface between the two company’s tee time reservation systems. This collaboration will allow seamless integration to Agilysys’ Golf Pro, significantly improving operational efficiency at Pinehurst.

For several years, Clubessential/Cenetic has employed a manual connection with Agilysys (Nasdaq: AGYS) requiring daily data transfer between the two technologies that resulted in hours of additional work for the golf staff. The new integration between b4checkin and Clubessential/Cenetic automates the process, eliminating the additional labor while also minimizing the risk of errors that are inherent with traditional processes.

Using North Carolina’s famed Pinehurst Resort as a pilot property, the two companies were able to successfully implement the integration. “The initial efficiencies that we have seen from the alliance of these two organizations has been significant,” said Pinehurst Resort’s Director of IT, Ed Nickelson. “Both companies feature top-of-the-line technology and we have seen nothing but positive results from their collaboration.”

Said Clubessential/Cenetic CEO, Dr. William Ivers: “The integration and relationship that b4checkin already had in place with Agilysys allowed us to complete our golf interface swiftly and effectively. This is the first of many significant integrations that we have planned between our companies. We are thrilled to partner with b4Checkin and look forward to providing additional integrated solutions for lodging, spa, activities, dining and more.”

“With b4golf as the conduit to GolfPro, Clubessential/Cenetic will be able to provide golfers real time access to available tee times,” said b4checkin Vice President of Sales and Marketing Greg Thomson. “This will make tee time reservations for golf extremely easy, while also maximizing revenue for the property or golf course by allowing a single or a pair of golfers to form threesomes or foursomes. Above all, this translates into better service delivery for the consumer, which is always the end goal.”

Branson-Area Golf Courses Share 2016 Plans and Packages

Branson/Lakes Area Golf Course Enhancements, Unique Packages Highlight 2016 Season

(BRANSON, MO) – With the Branson/Lakes Area golf destination already into “shoulder season” – the bookend timeframes in early spring and late fall when value-laden deals are popping – the Ozark Mountain oasis is one of America’s most compelling places due to new courses being developed, award-winning venues, a “legendary” pro tournament and multiple stay-and-play packages that provide a broad spectrum of options.

In addition to courses designed by Gary Player and Coore & Crenshaw that are being built, area golf and resort managers have been busy during the past several months enhancing operations and playing opportunities as illustrated by the following, a small sample of representative destination offerings.

Packages galore
Renowned for its overall resort excellence – it holds Trip Advisor’s coveted “Certificate of Excellence” – Big Cedar Lodge is increasingly becoming known for its burgeoning golf amenities.  With two new courses under construction, two already open to esteemed acclaim – Buffalo Ridge and Top of the Rock (both are played during the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge PGA Champions Tour event each April) – and a miniature golf course rated one of the “10 most unusual in America” (source: USA TODAY), there’s something for everyone.  That goes for its stay-and-play packages too, pairing a wide range of activities with golf including spa, boating, fishing, shooting and more.  The “Ultimate Guys Getaway Package” is indicative of the scope and depth of Big Cedar packages and includes:
- Round of golf at Top of the Rock
- Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail Tour
- $100 voucher for Cedar Creek Spa
- One-half day guided fishing at Bent Hook Marina
- Shooting Sports at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor Academy (includes firearm, 100 rounds ammunition, safety equipment and shooting guide)
- A $100 credit for the End of the Trail All American Wine Cellar, Whiskey Bar and Humidor
- The package requires a two-night minimum stay.

Call Big Cedar Lodge today at 1-800-225-6343, and mention code EXBR16 when making reservations.

Pristine and on pace
Thousand Hills Golf Resort’s owner invested substantially to improve the look and playability of the already-popular course in the heart of Branson.  One project included “de-brushing” the area between its creeks and the course, and nearly $100,000 was invested in new maintenance equipment to ensure immaculate playing conditions – something golfers avidly seek.

Designed to promote the best playing surfaces, Thousand Hills is re-grassing several teeing areas this spring, leveling and changing them to Zoysia. “Also, we have a much better handle on pace of play for 2016,” said course superintendent Pat Shay. “We are striving for players to enjoy sub 4 hour rounds.”

Enhancements on and off course
Pointe Royale Golf Village was particularly busy this winter, adding a new bridge on Hole No. 3, re-routing or improving paths on holes 3, 5 and 15, building a new teeing area for senior men on No. 9, and improving drainage on No. 16.  A golf car fleet and refreshed course restrooms are also new this year.

Player-friendly youth golf program
The 2016 Ozarks Junior Golf League is designed for children of all skill levels who are age 13 or under. A six-week program, the league includes practices, events, and instruction from professionals.  Participants receive a team jersey and two dozen golf balls. The events are a “scramble” format and played at Don Gardner Golf Course.  Scrambles are the most player-friendly golf game, allowing everyone to contribute and feel good about the experience.

Those interested should send a $100 check to Sticks & Stones Foundation, 1600 Ledgestone Way, Branson West, MO 65737. For more information about the program, email Bill Hasler at bill@svpoa.org.

GOLF Debuts New Weekly Show GOLF LIVE

New Video Program to Feature News, Analysis, Tips and Interviews with Top Names in Golf; Streaming on GOLF.com

(NEW YORK, NY) - Today, Time Inc.’s GOLF debuts a new weekly show that will cover the game from all angles, featuring revealing interviews with players and golf-loving celebrities, thoughtful news analysis from the game’s best writers, game-improvement advice from GOLF’s network of experts and more. The inaugural episode features an exclusive sit-down interview with five-time major champ Phil Mickelson and includes special guest Kelly Rohrbach, a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, actress and former collegiate golfer. The 30-minute program hosted by award-winning sportscaster Ryan Asselta will air live every Tuesday at noon ET on GOLF.com, and episodes will subsequently be available to watch on demand at GOLF.com/live. Content from the show will also be used in shorter clips to be shared across GOLF’s digital network. GOLF LIVE is driven by Callaway.

In the debut show, Phil Mickelson goes deep on a variety of topics, from the Big Four (Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth) and the art of smack-talking to why he’s feeling more bullish about his game than he has in years. On the current state of professional golf and how today’s young players stack up to Tiger Woods, Mickelson tells GOLF LIVE: “There is nobody in the game of golf that I have seen that is remotely close to the level of performance Tiger was in his prime … As great as the young players are, the level that I’ve seen out of him, especially when you go back to 2000 at the U.S. Open and his performance when he held all four major championships at once, I think we’re decades away from anybody getting back to that level.”

Upcoming shows will feature the likes of Michelle Wie, Greg Norman and other big names from the world of golf.

“We’re excited to launch this new live weekly video format for GOLF, which will bring our expert voices, access to the sport’s most interesting names and unique storytelling to our dedicated audience in a whole new way,” said Ian Orefice, Time Inc. Senior Executive Producer of original and current video programming. “The wide range of content we’ll produce from the new show will be leveraged across the GOLF digital network in various formats, and it’s just one phase of our plans to aggressively grow video at GOLF; with new short- and long-form video franchises set to roll out in the coming months.”

GOLF LIVE is the latest addition to GOLF.com’s ever-expanding portfolio of video offerings. Existing video mainstays include Tour Confidential, the long-running weekly show featuring GOLF and SI writers and editors debating the game’s hot-button topics; GOLF coverage from the majors, including live shows from the Masters and U.S. Open; equipment and instructional focused deep-dives and a range of daily news videos and lighter takes on the game as seen in the series of “Extra Spin” videos. Moving forward, the brand is not only adding the weekly live programming of GOLF LIVE but will introduce a series of new video features in the coming months, from short instructional videos designed for mobile viewing to in-depth documentary style reports on the game and its culture.

“We’re constantly looking for fun new ways to bring the game to our readers and viewers, and GOLF LIVE is one of our most exciting platforms yet,” said GOLF Managing Editor David Clarke. “I think golf fans will be surprised by how much we can deliver them in 30 minutes, from analysis to color pieces to slice-busting swing tips.”

The new show will be broadcast from Time Inc.’s state-of-the-art studios in downtown Manhattan and will feature a specialized set replete with a Full Swing golf simulator and putting green from Home Green Advantage. Callaway Golf is the official sponsor of GOLF LIVE. This relationship will see Callaway’s media productions team collaborate with Time Inc. on a series of custom segments, content integrations and cross-promotional activity.

BREAKING NEWS: Polara Golf Heading Toward Conforming with 'Polara Pro Tour' Ball

(NEWS) - Polara is releasing its first ever patented conforming golf ball, under the brand of 'Polara Pro Tour' in late 2016. Much like their original balls, these Polara Pro Tour balls will be visually unique in their dimple pattern, but have now been designed to be conforming.

As Chief Design and Developer, Dr. Doug Winfield said, "The pattern is laid out based on a cubeoctahedron which has 24 identical edges. This insures that the pattern is symmetric in flight.”

A number of prototypes have been tested and will eventually be submitted it to the USGA for approval in the next couple of months.

Polara will be running a Kickstarter.com campaign for the launch of these balls and is positioning it as a the ultimate Father's Day gift because, (i) they think this may be a historical event in golfing lore, and, (ii) every backer will be considered a Founder in Polara Pro Tour. So as a gift, they hope that sons and daughters will sign up their Father's as Founders of Polara Pro Tour and will be making a separate community site and treating them as our primary market moving forward.

Below is our review of the non-conforming products (which do add distance and accuracy).

Product Review: Polara Golf

When a package from Polara Golf arrived, I opened it with a certain amount of skepticism. We’ve all heard claims of products that will cure one problem or another - both in and out of the golf industry - but they generally fall well short of the hope the promise. Was Polara Golf going to follow suit?

The claim: Reduce your hook or slice by 50-75 percent with one-of-four balls - the Ultimate Straight, Ultimate Straight XS, XD and XDS. Could it really be as easy as this to correct an ugly flight pattern and provide much-needed accuracy? Here’s Polara Golf’s pitch:
"The secret behind our self correcting antislice golf ball technology is all in the dimple pattern. Our accuracy golf balls have shallower dimples around the equator and deeper dimples on each pole. When a Polara golf ball is flying in its preferred orientation with the alignment arrow pointing directly towards the target (this orientation is also known as “poles horizontal” or PH) the Polara ball exhibits significantly lower lift (and lower drag as well) than a normal golf ball. This reduction in lift translates directly into a reduction of the force tending to cause the ball to curve from a straight trajectory, resulting in a hook or slice."

I took to the course to test Polara Golf’s claim. While there, I was going to kill two birds with one stone and sample a pair of the company’s drivers, as well. In my bag were the 10.5-degree and HL1 Advantage Drivers. Polara also offers a 12-degree and HL3 driver.

First up: The XD ball and 10.5 driver. The swing wasn’t great, but the ball stayed straight. More amazing, I thought, was that I carried a hill that generally catches similar efforts. Longer AND straighter? No way.

Same held true for the Ultimate Straight XS and HL1 driver. The ball not only stayed online, but also added much-welcomed yardage.

Not unlike my high school years, I had failed to do enough homework. As it turns out, the Advantage Drivers have been deemed illegal by the United States Golf Association, exceeding the game’s governing body’s ball velocity limits due to their ultra-thin, beta-Titanium face, which is lighter, stronger and more resilient than standard Titanium drivers. This creates the “trampoline effect” that provides explosive distance ... but also an “unfair” advantage for those who utilize such equipment.

As you may suspect, the Polara balls are also not approved by the USGA. This from the USGA website:
"In 1980 the USGA adopted the Symmetry Rule, which was modified in 1990 and is enforced by both a performance test, which has changed over the years, and a litmus test of intent. The basic tenets of the Rule remain the same now as then:
1. The ball must not be designed, manufactured or intentionally modified to have properties that differ from those of a spherically symmetric ball.
2. The intent in design to produce a ball that would perform in an asymmetrical way would itself be sufficient to consider the product non-conforming."

What does all this mean? If you’re playing in a USGA event or going to submit your score to a USGA-approved handicapping system, you cannot use the Polara balls or drivers. I’m guessing that applies to less than 10 percent of the golfing population.

If you’re just out for a casual round of golf with friends, all Polara equipment is certainly approved for recreational use.

Bottom line: The Polara claims are correct ... the drivers provide greater distance and the balls increase accuracy - two keys to lower scores and more enjoyment.

QUOTES:
“There’s a contrast to between the beauty of the West Coast to the sort of do-or-die nature of almost every shot you see coming down the stretch at the Florida Swing.” – Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee

“There’s no faking it around any of these golf courses running up to the Masters…The interesting thing about these courses is that you know where you stand in your swing and in your game headed into the Masters, because they will show you.” Golf Channel analyst and former World No. 1 David Duval

“This is a whole new venture for me. Most of the season is, because I’m working the exact opposite schedule in a way than I’ve done for the last 19 years. I’m just really excited about joining the NBC guys and starting a few fights, which is what I intend to do all year. Poke in the right places, try to be a creative irritant.” – Golf Channel and NBC Sports analyst David Feherty

Carnoustie Sportswear Debuts Fall '16 Collection

(IRVINE, CA) - Golf apparel manufacturer Carnoustie Sportswear has introduced its Fall '16 men's lineup of Mercerized Cotton Knits, Performance Knits, Cotton Suedes and The Mackenzie Collection of cotton outerwear.

Mercerized Cotton Knits
Carnoustie has forged a reputation over the years for making some of the industry's finest mercerized cotton knits. While many competitors have changed their sourcing and/or removed quality from the product, Carnoustie has remained steadfast in its commitment to offer only the finest quality in mercerized cotton. Accordingly, we still produce in the same factories we have been using for more than 20 years, and we still use only the finest cotton and accessories available. Our buttons are made of real pearl, we triple-mercerize our fabric, and our collars are made with several plies of yarn and contain Lycra for shape retention.

For Fall '16, our collection of Mercerized Cotton Knits continues to evolve. Neater, more subtle jacquard patterns and tonal designs are still trending. Stripes are elegantly simple. While many styles are designed with classic knit collars, we are featuring more self fabric collars than ever before. They give the polo an updated, crisp look. Also on trend are retro designs in which a solid collar, placket, sleeves and back  are contrasted with a patterned front panel body fabric. And, we continue to focus on small details that can add interest, such as contrasting button thread, contrasting colors on the underside of collars, and placket construction.

"The simplicity of the patterns with the boldness of color combine to create a collection of knits that stand out in today's crowded marketplace," says CEO Marshall Mancillas. "We have consistently given our customer quality he can depend on. When he buys a Carnoustie product he knows that it will be in his wardrobe for a long time, looking as good as the day he bought it. And, he knows that he will be fashionable on and off the course in a Carnoustie polo."

Performance Knits
Our collection of performance knits continues to gain momentum. Clearly, our strategy of designing a collection of performance knits that merchandise seamlessly with our mercerized cotton knits, and indeed the entire collection, was well received. While our performance collection of polos is designed with an appreciation for the exciting new trends emerging in this market segment, our performance collection remains refined and elegant.

Our collection of performance knits affords us the opportunity to be responsive to today's trends, and for Fall '16 we are featuring chest stripes, color blocking, melange yarns and many self fabric collars. For the first time, we are offering a beautiful long-sleeve style in five wonderful melange colors. Our long-sleeve polo has the perfect combination of weight and drape that will make it a favorite first layer in the colder conditions associated with the fall season.

"We are thrilled with the continued enthusiasm that our customers have for our performance styles," says Mancillas. "Our instincts were well-founded: There is clearly a demand for performance garments that offer the wearability that today's fibers can offer, but that are styled in a tasteful, timeless fashion. There has been so much interest in this segment of our business that we have rebranded these goods under a new label. Beginning with Fall '16, these goods will be offered under the 'Carnoustie TECH' label that was designed to evoke the active, performance nature of these goods," added Mancillas.

Cotton Suedes
For many years now, Carnoustie has had the reputation of offering the industry's finest fleece. We have sourced these goods for more than 20 years with the same factory that simply makes the best fleece available. Others have tried to duplicate our goods and from a distance they seem comparable, but upon closer examination it becomes very apparent that these goods are lacking. For Fall '16, we have developed wonderful new colors, new handsome jacquard patterns and even some new styles including a modern-yet-retro full-zip jacket with front panels.

"The market has remained very loyal to the Carnoustie cotton suede collection through the years," says Mancillas. "Despite the competition in this category, these goods have developed and maintained a wonderful following. The extraordinary hand that these

goods offer is a result of a very intricate and proprietary brushing process. It is a more costly process which virtually eliminates the piling we see on lesser quality garment s but nothing else comes close. I am excited to debut the new colors and styles we have developed for Fall '16. I am confident they will stir some excitement in this category."

The Mackenzie Collection
The Mackenzie Collection was developed a few seasons ago because sometimes a garme
nt that is a little lighter in weight than our brushed fleece is all you need. This collection just keeps getting more and more popular, and accordingly we have expanded this offering for Fall '16. In addition to ¼-zip vests and long-sleeve styles, we will offer for Fall '16 a fun yarn-dyed chest stripe pullover that quickly becomes the centerpiece of every merchandise group. It incorporates most, if not all, of the colors in the merchandise group in a contemporary-yet-tasteful manner. Also new for Fall '16 is a full-zip jacket with a sporty flat knit detail that runs along the sleeve from the neck to the cuff. Nothing affords easier layering than an easy on/off full-zip jacket, and ours stands out as it is casual yet elegant.

"I have been taken aback by this collection's immense popularity," says Mancillas. "But I shouldn't be surprised. These styles are versatile, offer a perfect year-round weight, and are affordable. So this category deserves to be expanded and that's just what we did. And, I am confident that the new additions for Fall '16 will be very well received."

Jim Dodson Talks about Pure Golf Auctions Starting March 1

Author of Final Rounds, American Triumvirate and Ben Hogan, An American Life

(RELEASE) - One morning recently, I stopped by my friend Tom Stewart’s Old Sport & Gallery and Bookshop in the Village of Pinehurst – the Old Curiosity Shop of the Golf World, as I like to think of it – with a unique item for his special Internet auction of one-of-kind golf artifacts and collectibles.

It was a copy of Howard Miller’s How To Relax, a bestselling 1945 book that belonged to the great Ben Hogan Himself, passed along to me more that a decade ago by one of his dearest friends. As Hogan’s authorized biographer, I found the book to be a useful insight into the Wee Iceman’s carefully cultivated public persona and key to his success. Beneath the chilly exterior of a champion who wrapped himself in forbidding silence was a brilliant tactician who understood the importance of being able to mentally relax and perform his best under extreme conditions.

So why would I wish to let go of such an important little book?

Frankly, two reasons:
- One is that such an influential artifact might fetch a tidy sum that can be passed on to the good works of the Ben Hogan Foundation, upon which I’m honored to serve. The Foundation does terrific work with young people and perpetuates the Hogan legacy in a number of important ways.
- Another reason is that I think this valuable little book deserves to circulate in the wider world where it may wind up being appreciated as part of an important collection rather that squirreled away in a biographer’s overcrowded home office.

To this optimistic end If ever there was a place where the little book might find a proper new home, it’s likely to be Brother Stewart’s Pure Golf Auctions, a rare international internet event scheduled to take place from March 1to 15, highlighted by some of the most remarkable golf treasures to be found anywhere on the planet.

I like to call Tom the “Lord Mayor of Pinehurst” because his eccentric and wonderful golf shop (featured in every publication in the land) is essentially the cross-roads of the game, a place in the Home of American Golf where historians, collectors, investors, Tour players and ordinary hackers like me feel right at home rubbing elbows with Arnie, Jack and other giants of the game.

As a Life Member of the PGA of America, writer and former tournament player who actively competed in several countries, Tom also served as head professional at some of the finest private clubs and resorts in the nation. His extensive travels around the world turned him into a serious collector of top golf art and rare collectibles and ultimately brought him home to Pinehurst to open the Old Sport Gallery in the Village’s historical Harvard Building.

Just between us this auction began when Tom’s wife Ilana suggested he conduct a comprehensive inventory of his large warehouse where years of his rare finds of artwork, books, and vintage clubs were housed. “There were so many amazing things I discovered,” he says, “I decided it wouldn’t be right not to make them available to collectors, organizations, clubs and individuals who want a living piece of history. The Internet makes an auction like this really possible for everyone to participate – the only one I know backed up by a bricks an mortar store.”

Consider, if you will, seed merchant Samuel Ryder’s actual office work desk from 1916, sent over from Hertfordshire, England, to be replicated for a line of premium quality furniture in America that never got produced. Only an exquisite one-of-kind Ryder Cup marquetry made bar complete with Ryder Cup crystal resulted – and Tom has that as well.

Besides scores of historic first editions of golf’s most celebrated writers, there are original oil paintings and signed limited edition prints by Richard Chorley, Linda Hartough, Arthur Weaver, Michael Mullins, Bill Williams, Thomas LeGault and Guy Salvato among others. A rare photo taken by Henry Cotton of Hogan practicing at Wentworth in 1953 is one my favorites, as is a large sterling silver trophy, Del Monte Cup of 1899, won by C.E. Maud, who later helped developed golf in California. The auction will also offer perhaps the most extensive collection to be found anywhere of historical magazines, journals, adverts and unpublished photos dating from 1875. If you really want a conversation starter for the club foyer, consider the hand-made 1/2000-scale replica of the famous Royal and Ancient clubhouse featuring over 20,000 pieces made painstakingly by hand by a golf-mad NASA scientist.

Some of the significant items in this inaugural auction include artifacts from the estates of Richard Tufts, owner of Pinehurst and President of the USGA, Edwin Carter, who ran the PGA Tour for many years and was involved with the administration of the Masters; PGA Member George Lewis, John Derr, CBS Sports and Masters commentator, and Morton Olman, the “Godfather” of modern golf collecting among others.

I could go on and on naming artifacts and treasures. Better yet, you can sign up now by registering at www.puregolfauctions.com and go treasure hunting at your own leisurely pace beginning on March

Sincerely, Jim Dodson
