Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass Media Day to Showcase Players and Event

(HARRIS, MICHIGAN) – The Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass Media Day & Golf Outing will be held June 1; special guests include two players scheduled to compete in this year’s Symetra Tour “Road to the LPGA” event – three-time college All-American Emily Tubert, a contestant on Golf Channel’s “Big Break Myrtle Beach,” and area star Brooke Ferrell, a University of Wisconsin All-Big Ten member competing on a sponsor’s exemption.

Media Day starts at noon in the Island Convention Center inside the casino resort. It will be followed by complimentary golf on Sweetgrass, an award-winning course designed by Paul Albanese of Albanese & Lutzke. Please RSVP no later than Wednesday, May 25, by calling Debbie Wickstrom at 906-723-2123.

Also scheduled to attend media day is Tim Kramer, Symetra Tour Director of Business Affairs. Island Resort Championship has been one the tour’s shining events for years, and Kramer will address the event’s success and the tour’s growth.

The 2016 Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass will be held June 24-26, with all proceeds going to local non-profit organizations. Sweetgrass will host a field of 144 players competing for a $125,000 purse. The Island Resort Championship is also part of the Potawatomi Cup, a series of tournaments involving courses with Native American Indian or Potawatomi tribal ties.

This is the sixth consecutive year the professional golf tournament will be held at Island Resort and Casino’s Sweetgrass, voted to Golfweek’s “America’s Best Courses You Can Play” by state. The Symetra Tour “Road to the LPGA” is the world's largest international women's development tour and provides fans a front-row seat to watch rising stars of the game.

Former Symetra Tour players have won hundreds of LPGA titles, including dozens of major championships.  Dani Holmqvist won the 2015 IRC Championship with a 10-under-par total of 206 and earned full LPGA Tour playing privileges in 2016 with her season-long performance.

Three-day grounds passes to the 54-hole event are $10 and include entry into daily prize drawings. Children 17 years old and under are admitted free with a paying adult. Tickets are available at Island Resort & Casino and at local organizations such as the Delta County Junior Golf Association and the NCA Guarantee Scholarship Fund.
