Kapalua Golf's Plantation Course to Undergo Multi-Million Dollar Enhancement

(Maui, Hawaii) – Kapalua Golf’s Plantation Course, annually rated as a top 100 golf course in the world and consistently ranked as the “Best Golf Course You Can Play” in Hawaii, will undergo a multi-million dollar enhancement project aimed at refining and revitalizing the 27-year-old golf course. On-course work is expected to begin in February of 2019 and be completed in November 2019.

Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the original Plantation Course design team, will assist with the extensive course refinement project. In addition, Troon’s Design/Development/Agronomy team, as well as long-time Maui resident and Golf Channel personality Mark Rolfing, will also work on the project. Enhancements will include: resurfacing all greens with Tif Eagle Bermuda; renovating every bunker on the golf course; and re-grassing tees, fairways and roughs with state-of-the-art Celebration Bermuda turf. New tee complexes will also be added, including additional forward tees to help increase guest enjoyment and several new tournament tees will also be built on key holes to further test the world’s best PGA TOUR professionals during the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

“We look forward to the opportunity to restore many elements of the Plantation Course and implement a few ‘refinements’,” said Bill Coore. “It’s like when you have a special piece of art, or something really special to you, and you get a chance to dust if off and make it new again. This will be a very thoughtful restoration and refining process, but it’s not a redesign. We are very happy with the way the course looks and the way it has gone through the past nearly three decades.”

In addition to the Plantation Course enhancements during 2019, Kapalua will begin three other significant projects this summer (2018), including:
- Upgrading/renovating the Plantation Golf Shop
- Relocate the Bay Course Operations and Golf Shop to the Village Center, providing an even better “sense of arrival” for guests playing the Bay Course
- Redesign and modernize the Kapalua Golf Academy practice facility

“We are confident that these numerous enhancements will continue to strengthen the Plantation Course’s position as the top golf course in Hawaii and support further upward progression in Top 100 rankings,” said Alex Nakajima, general manager, Kapalua Golf & Tennis. “All of our upcoming enhancements are geared toward improving the overall golf experience for our guests, while also ensuring the Sentry Tournament of Champions remains a top stop on the PGA TOUR. We’ll be excited to show off the newly refined Plantation Course to those playing in the tournament in January of 2020.”

South Carolina Golf Border Crossings

Golf fans traveling to Augusta and Hilton Head Island during the next few weeks can hone their games on numerous outstanding links across South Carolina

(March 2018) — For golf fans, the dawning of spring truly marks the beginning of the golf season as well. The ball gets rolling with the granddaddy of them all, the Masters at Augusta National; then continues southeast to the coast and Hilton Head Island, S.C., for the player- and fan-favorite alike, the RBC Heritage.

Savvy golfers interested in not only watching the professionals, but also playing outstanding courses will find themselves in one of the game’s most golf-rich states. From the Lowcountry to the Upstate, South Carolina offers numerous memorable golfing experiences.

Resort Report
Located 144 miles from Augusta on Hilton Head Island, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort is where college stars such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson demonstrated their early prowess during the resort’s longtime intercollegiate golf tournament played over two of its three outstanding courses by a trio of legends in golf course architecture: the renowned Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course, the Arthur Hills Course and the Fazio course, designed by George Fazio and his nephew, famed architect Tom Fazio – all three of which have been named South Carolina’s “Golf Course of the Year.” For short-term and long-term accommodations, Palmetto Dunes offers the island’s premier selection of vacation rental properties from oceanfront hotel rooms to spacious villas overlooking the harbour, lagoon, fairways or beach.

Old Favorites
A regional duo (Old 96 District and Olde English District) offers up some of its finest golf where small towns, medium prices and big-name course architects harmoniously blend together. Along the way, you’ll learn plenty of rich Revolutionary War history, experience Civil War intrigue and play two state park gems at Cheraw State Park Golf Course and Hickory Knob State Park. Located 55 miles from Augusta, the Inn on the Square in downtown Greenwood offers multi-round packages with free shuttle service, full breakfast each morning and discounts at its Carriage House Dining or the Fox & Hound Lounge. Meanwhile, the Olde English District boasts the highly acclaimed Camden Country Club (Donald Ross 1903) and Rock Hill Country Club (A.W. Tillinghast 1934) and various packages.

America’s Value Golf Destination
For more than a half-century, traveling enthusiasts making their way through South Carolina along I-95 (and nearby I-26) have taken advantage of Santee’s excellent golf, superb fishing, affordable accommodations, and outstanding food and entertainment. Upscale premium green fees are nowhere to be found and dollars definitely do go further in Santee. For about $60 per day during the off-season guests can play golf with a cart, enjoy accommodations and a hearty breakfast. Santee offers — all in one I-95 exit — three lakeside golf courses with an additional 14 layouts within a half-hour drive.

Private Matters
One of the game’s most positive stories during the past decade has been the emergence of McConnell Golf, which now owns a dozen 18-hole, private golf courses plus one nine-hole course around the Carolinas and Tennessee. Musgrove Mill in Clinton S.C., serves as a tribute to pure golf and a great day-trip for any golfer wanting to tackle one of golf’s finest tests — a sanctuary for golfers to eat and rest their heads after their rounds.

Skillfully designed within the surrounding countryside by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, the highly decorated Musgrove Mill is indeed off the beaten path — a special getaway reminiscent of Pine Valley in Clementon, N.J. “The Mill” features cottages for overnight accommodations, a first-rate practice facility, full-service clubhouse with a private chef, and historic significance as a former Revolutionary War battle site. Boasting a small, select membership, no tee times, and a secluded, natural course layout, The Mill is the ideal destination for the accomplished golfer.

PXG Announces New Iron Technology

(Scottsdale, AZ) –  PXG, the luxury performance golf equipment company that disrupted industry norms with its bold approach to product development and distribution, has announced it will release a new generation of iron technology. Three years in the making, PXG 0311 GEN2 Irons improve on PXG’s already outstanding clubs in every measurable way.

In 2015, PXG introduced its groundbreaking original 0311 iron technology. The company had 12 employees and a singular vision – develop the world’s finest golf equipment. Today, PXG has more than 170 employees and a global footprint, but its vision has not shifted.

With performance as PXG’s only measure for success, the company took its time and left nothing on the table in the development of its GEN2 Irons. Through innovations in materials, technology and customization, PXG 0311 GEN2 Irons deliver better turf interaction, greater distance, faster ball speeds, higher launch and improved accuracy.

“It’s a tall task creating a club that is better than the best, but that’s our commitment,” said PXG founder and CEO Bob Parsons. “PXG will never release a new club that is not notably better than what we currently offer. And we believe, PXG GEN2 Irons set a new standard for the world’s finest.”

Forged from 8620 soft carbon steel, for enhanced aesthetics and durability over time, PXG 0311 GEN2 Irons have the sleek look of a blade and a buttery-soft feel.

“The difference is noticeable,” FedEx Cup champion Billy Horschel stated. “The new irons setup beautifully, with a little less offset and a thinner top line. They feel amazing and are incredibly consistent.”

Each club also features a hidden cavity injection molded with new COR2 Technology, a proprietary vibration dampening material with explosive C.O.R. (coefficient of restitution) properties. Combined with PXG’s new internal face perimeter cut-out design, which dramatically increases the functional face area, COR2 Technology helps deliver higher ball speeds, a more consistent response, improved accuracy, and an exceptional feel at impact.

To maximize performance and deliver extreme forgiveness, PXG 0311 GEN2 Irons present the world’s thinnest club face and PXG’s signature perimeter weighting technology.

Two-time major champion Lydia Ko shared, “I absolutely love the feel through the ball with the new irons, and my ball flight is consistently higher. The clubs are so forgiving on mishits that my distance isn’t really affected.”

“GEN2 irons have somehow improved on an iron that I thought would be nearly impossible to improve. And, PXG improved them in every way,” five-time PGA TOUR winner Ryan Moore added. “The clubs went in my bag immediately!”

Designed to meet the needs of golfers at every level, PXG 0311 GEN2 Irons will be available in four collections – Tour (T), Players (P), Xtreme Forgiveness (XF), and Super Game Improvement (SGI).

PXG 0311 GEN2 Irons are $400 a stick for Chrome and $500 for Xtreme Dark, a black diamond-like carbon coating. Purchased through PXG, price includes a custom fitting with a PXG Master Fitter, access to an extensive matrix of premium shafts and array of grip options.

The Old White TPC Tees off with 105th Season of Golf

(WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va.) – The 105th season of golf on The Old White TPC Course at []The Greenbrier officially begins on Friday, March 30, with a special ceremony to mark the historic occasion.

Commencing at 10 a.m., on the iconic first tee, the ceremony includes some anecdotes on the course’s storied past from The Greenbrier historian Dr. Robert Conte, as well as a question and answer session. A ceremonial first ball of the season follows Conte’s remarks, before tee times officially begin for 2018.

“The Old White TPC has an amazing story to tell, and it is a significant part of golf history in the United States,” said Dr. Jill Justice, President, The Greenbrier. “We’re excited about another year of golf on this treasured classic.”

Originally designed and constructed by Charles Blair Macdonald and Seth Raynor in 1914, The Old White TPC was named for the well known Old White Hotel, which stood on the resort grounds from 1858 through 1922.

Macdonald, the father of American golf course architecture, modeled several holes from some of the most famous throughout Europe. The 8th Hole was styled after the "Redan" at North Berwick, the 13th after the "Alps" at Prestwick and the 15th after the "Eden" at St. Andrews. His associate, Seth Raynor, assisted in the course construction and returned in the 1920s to oversee updates to the golf course.

Through the years, the course has played host to legendary golfers like Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino, as well as presidents and celebrities from the world of sports and entertainment.

Since 2010, The Old White TPC has been the host of The Greenbrier Classic, an annual PGA TOUR FedEx Cup event, making it the oldest course on the PGA TOUR. Past champions include Stuart Appleby, Scott Stallings, Ted Potter Jr., Jonas Blixt, Angel Cabrera, Danny Lee and Xander Schauffele. A who’s who list of the best golfers in the world have participated in the tournament, including Tom Watson, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, John Daly and many others. The 2018 Greenbrier Classic takes place July 2-8.

After sustaining substantial damage from flood waters in June of 2016, forcing the cancellation of The 2016 Greenbrier Classic less than a month later, The Old White TPC reopened in July of 2017 just in time for the tournament, fully restored by noted golf course architect Keith Foster. By fully embracing the original Macdonald/Raynor elements, the course has been overwhelmingly received by PGA TOUR players and guests alike. Golf Digest named The Old White TPC the Best Restoration of 2017. It was also named one of America’s 100 Best Public Courses by that same publication.

The 2018 golf season on The Old White TPC runs from March 30 through November 26 and is closed only for needed maintenance and preparations for The Greenbrier Classic. Greens fees begin at $300 for registered guests and $350 for non-registered guests. To schedule a tee time, email or call 877-599-9153 (Option 1).

Ernie Els' Desaru Coast Masterpiece Unveiled in Brand New Ocean Course Imagery

The Els Club Malaysia’s stunning Desaru Coast Ocean Course shown in never-before-seen series of breathtaking imagery

(Johor Bahru, Malaysia) - The Els Club Malaysia is today delighted to introduce a brand new collection of imagery of its Desaru Coast - Ocean Course, showcasing the vision of mastermind Ernie Els and the beauty of Malaysia’s southernmost tip in the region of Johor Bahru.

The course imagery depicts the three 9-hole loops; The Coast, The Lakes and The Ridge, bringing to life the quality and distinction of each course. The layout was inspired by four-time Major Champion, Ernie Els, who has built a reputation as one of the world’s preeminent designers, imparting in his creations his experience of golf courses from all over the world.

Desaru Coast spans over 3,900 acres of the stunning 17km of coastline adjacent to the South China Sea. The 45-hole property, which also encompasses the Els and Vijay Singh-designed Valley Course, provides golfers with not only the excellence and quality of an Els-designed layout but also beautiful surrounding in which to relax and world-class facilities to hone their skills. These include The Els Performance Golf Academy, which is the first of its kind in the region, the Big Easy Bar & Grill and the Café 261 - a relaxed terrace café with golf course views created as an ode to Ernie's Open Championship successes.

Of the images, newly-appointed General Manager, Stephen Havrilla, said: “It is fantastic to see the development of this course since its opening in 2016. Ernie’s vision for the Desaru Coast has really come to life as the courses continue to mature, offering an immensely entertaining challenge for golfers of all levels.

“We are delighted with the new batch of images that we are able to issue to media today. We think they have captured the essence and beauty of Desaru and are sure will drive a good deal of interest with potential visitors over the coming months”.

Easily accessibility via road, air and sea, the Troon-managed destination is growing in popularity with the introduction of a series of luxury hotel brands. In close proximity to the golf courses and sharing the pristine setting of Desaru Coast are the Aman Resorts & Villas, The Westin Desaru Resort, Anantara Desaru Resort and Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast. Rio Verde Country Club & Community in Midst of a Renaissance

(Rio Verde, Ariz.) – The Rio Verde Country Club and Community are in the midst of a renaissance. As one of the first golf developments thoughtfully placed between the eastern foothills of the McDowell Mountains and the Tonto National Forest, it has attracted golf and nature lovers for the last 46 years. But recently, this former slice of desert ranchland is thriving with renewed energy.

More than 100 new members have joined since Troon Privé, the private club operating division of Troon, was hired to manage the club in mid-2016, and the Net Promoter Score (NPS) has nearly doubled. An annual measurement of member willingness to recommend the club to others, the higher NPS scores can be attributed to many factors, including:
- Troon’s agronomy team implementing strict agronomical practices to provide members with consistent and quality course conditions
- Service levels improving through increased staff training
- Improved food and beverage options, including dine-in, carry out or staff delivery
- An increase in member programs with new experience nights and special events
- Enhanced communication through a new club website and member portal and other digital messaging

“It’s amazing the improvements we’ve seen and continue to see here at Rio Verde,” said Dave Ulm, general manager, Rio Verde Country Club. “Our members are engaged and excited about the future of this club. There’s a whole new buzz about the lifestyle available here at Rio Verde.”

With Full Membership no longer limited to those who live in the community, Rio Verde members enjoy unlimited access to dining and events, 36-holes of parkland-style golf, a driving range, three putting greens, bunker/chipping complex, tennis, pickleball, swimming, fitness, bocce, and dozens of special interest clubs. There are no food and beverage minimums or trail fees (non-residents don’t pay to use the club’s carts), and Full Members also receive preferred access and rates to more than 270 private, resort and daily fee clubs around the world through Troon. Troon Privé Privilege offers tee times at participating Troon Privé-managed private clubs for just $35 to $55 per round. Troon Advantage provides tee times at participating Troon Golf-managed resort and daily-fee clubs at a rate guaranteed to be 15% off the lowest published price. Day Pass access to other amenities such as fitness, spa, tennis, pickleball and more is also available through both programs.

Earlier this year, members approved a multi-million dollar, member-funded renovation project on the existing 27,000 square-foot clubhouse, with work expected to begin this summer on dining venues, common areas and the golf shop. A grand re-opening of the clubhouse is expected in December 2018.

The Troon Privé Division currently manages more than 80 private clubs, half of which are member owned. For more information about Rio Verde, visit or call 877-746-8373.

(PITTSBURGH) – DICK’S Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS), the largest U.S.-based, full-line omni-channel sporting goods retailer, announced today the relaunch of the iconic Tommy Armour golf brand, with a renewed focus on innovative golf club technology that promotes both forgiveness and distance. Men’s, women’s and senior drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges and putters are all included in the new offering. Tommy Armour will be available online and in-stores exclusively at DICK’S and Golf Galaxy starting March 18.

DICK’S partnered with Designworks, a subsidiary of BMW Group, to develop a premium set of game improvement woods and irons for mid-to-high-handicap golfers that are offered at a lower price point than comparable products. One standout innovation is the TA1 Driver, featuring a DAT 55G titanium face, which is a high tensile strength material that provides longer distance and more forgiveness and is not widely available in the US market.

“Participating in the re-launch of an iconic brand is an exciting and inspiring opportunity” said Laura Robins, Director at Designworks LA Studio. “Drawing on our experience working across a number of industries on a wide range of performance-based products enabled us to deliver unique design and technology insights for the new Tommy Armour clubs, resulting in a product which provides golfers with a truly premium experience.”

With the addition of Tommy Armour, DICK’S continues to focus on the expansion of its in-house private label brands like CALIA by Carrie Underwood, Field & Stream, Top Flite, Maxfli, Walter Hagen and many others.

Switzerland’s Oldest Golf Club, Engadine Golf Club, Celebrates 125th Anniversary in 2018

(St Moritz, Switzerland) - Switzerland’s oldest golf club, the Engadine Golf Club, established in 1893 and located in the picturesque Engadine Valley, will this year celebrate its 125th anniversary with a number of commemorative golf events whilst also looking back on its rich, eventful history.

The Engadine Golf Club not only has a fascinating story to tell but the fact that the golf club is home to two separate, very different golf courses located a mile apart and run by a single organisation, Golf Engadin St. Moritz (, sets it apart from most traditional golf clubs.

The 125-year-old Samedan course is an ancient, links-style parkland layout that runs along the flat valley floor, meandering through streams and characterized by broad fairways flanked by giant larch trees whilst its younger sister course at Zuoz-Madulain, opened in 2003, offers challenging elevation changes, undulating fairways fringed by meadow flowers and receptive greens as it weaves its way along the side of the mountain and between the pine forests.

Situated on some of the highest terrain in the country and within a UNESCO World Heritage site, both Samedan and Zuoz offer stunning views of the towering Alpine mountains beyond and many of the charming villages of the Engadine Valley.

To mark the 125th milestone and ensure an unforgettable year for the club, Golf Engadin St Moritz is hosting a series of golf events over the summer as well as staging two exhibitions to showcase the unique history of the club.

Preparations for the anniversary actually began in 2016 when the club decided to plant 125 sapling larch trees on the Samedan and Zuoz courses. With some of the existing larch trees even older than Samedan, 125 club members sponsored the planting of a single larch each to guarantee the future of both courses and their characteristic larch populations.  This sustainability project will be recognised at the Anniversary Tournament on August 1 when Mixed Foursomes will be played, just as it would have been some 125 years ago. An Anniversary Dinner will then take place that evening at the famous Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in St. Moritz.

However the first event to launch the summer celebrations will take place on June 6 when the club’s partners, local dignitaries, hotels and nearby golf clubs will be welcomed to the Samedan clubhouse for a look behind the scenes at Engadine Golf and to view an exhibition of over 20 posters located around the Samedan golf complex depicting the club’s history.

This will be followed by the St Moritz Gold Cup in July, the Swiss Senior Amateur Championship the week after that and the three-day GolfersChoice Engadin ProAm over both golf courses in August.

The Engadine Golf Club will also be the theme of an exhibition at the Design Gallery St Moritz from June to December. Along the famous giant escalator from Lake St Moritz up to Badrutt’s Palace, 31 posters will portray the times gone by at the club as well as the development of golf in the Engadine.

Finally a 20-year-old single malt whisky by Glentauchers in just 246 numbered bottles, 125 of which come with a matching decanter designed by Robert Niederer, has also been produced to mark the jubilee. This being a nod to the fact that at the end of the 19th and start of the 20th century, sandwiches were washed with whisky for breakfast at Samedan!

Ernie Els and Jim Furyk Receive USGA Special Exemptions into 2018 U.S. Open

Past U.S. Open Champions to Compete at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club

(LIBERTY CORNER, N.J.) – Two-time U.S. Open champion Ernie Els, of South Africa, and 2003 U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., have received special exemptions into the 118th U.S. Open Championship, which will be conducted by the United States Golf Association (USGA), June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, in Southampton, N.Y.

Els, 48, won the 1994 U.S. Open at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club and the 1997 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club, in Bethesda, Md. Furyk, 47, won his U.S. Open title at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club. Els will compete in his 26th consecutive U.S. Open, while Furyk will make his 24th Open start and his 23rd in a row.

“It’s a thrill and I’m very grateful to the USGA,” said Els, who is one of 18 players to win multiple U.S. Opens and was the first international player to accomplish the feat since Alex Smith in 1910. “Obviously, the U.S. Open means a lot to me. This is kind of where it all started, you might say. Winning at Oakmont at the age of 24, as I’ve said before it was almost like a shock the way it happened. I still thought I had some steps to climb to get there. Then ’97 was just a very, very special week, winning in the nation’s capital, and that set me up for a really great year. For me there are so many wonderful memories from U.S. Opens and it’s exciting to be able to keep that story going.”

In 1994 at Oakmont, Els defeated Loren Roberts and Colin Montgomerie in a playoff after the three players tied at 5-under-par 279 through 72 holes. Els won the playoff on the 20th hole with a par after Roberts found a greenside bunker on the par-4 11th, leading to a bogey. Montgomerie was eliminated after shooting 78 for 18 holes while Els and Roberts both shot 74. Els became the youngest U.S. Open winner since Jerry Pate in 1976.

Els survived a four-way battle to win his second U.S. Open in 1997, finishing with five consecutive pars for a 72-hole score of 4-under 276. Montgomerie was one stroke behind, third-round leader Tom Lehman was two back and Jeff Maggert finished five strokes off the pace. All four were tied for the lead with nine holes to play on Congressional’s Blue Course. Els’ 5-iron approach to within 18 feet on the par-4 17th helped separate him from the group.

Furyk was three strokes better than Stephen Leaney, of Australia, in his 2003 victory. He finished at 8-under 272, which tied the U.S. Open scoring record and has since been broken by Rory McIlroy (2011). Furyk opened with rounds of 67-66-67 to establish the 54-hole scoring mark (also eclipsed by McIlroy in 2011) and entered the final round leading by three strokes.

“As a past U.S. Open champion, I am grateful to the USGA to accept a special exemption into the U.S. Open Championship, where the quality of the course and how it’s set up pushes me to step up my physical and mental game,” Furyk said. “Getting to play in another U.S. Open at a historic course like Shinnecock Hills really gets my competitive spirit flowing. I’ve had great success in my many trips to the U.S. Open and winning one is a highlight of my career.”

In addition to their victories, Els and Furyk own exemplary U.S. Open records. Els, who was the runner-up to Tiger Woods in 2000 and was third in 2010, owns 10 top-10 finishes. Furyk is a three-time runner-up (2006, 2007, 2016) and has been among the top five finishers seven times.
Els and Furyk are the first players to receive special exemptions into the U.S. Open since Retief Goosen in 2016. Prior to Goosen, Tom Watson and Vijay Singh were awarded exemptions in 2010 at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links. Goosen missed the 36-hole cut at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club, while Watson and Singh tied for 29th and 40th, respectively, in 2010. Hale Irwin is the lone player to win the U.S. Open playing on a special exemption, doing so in a memorable 19-hole playoff over Mike Donald in 1990 at Medinah (Ill.) Country Club to claim his third U.S. Open title.

Online entry applications for the 2018 U.S. Open began on March 7 (, and continue through Wednesday, April 25 at 5 p.m. EDT.
